129th Appledore & Instow Regatta

This week and taking place only 8 miles from us here at Dune Cottages is the world famous 129th Appledore and Instow Regatta. Days of family fun for all ages a full itinerary can be found below :

129th Appledore & Instow Regatta Programme
26th July 2014 to 7th August 2014

The full Regatta Programme for all events including Rowing, Sailing and Gig Races with timings will be available to purchase on all Regatta Days from local shops in Appledore & Instow and at the Regatta Tent on Appledore Quay.


Gaffers & Luggers Race 5:30pm Start
See the majestic Gaff and Lugg sail rigged sailing boat compete through a challenging course starting just off
Appledore Quay and making their way over to Braunton Burrows heading to the Lifeboat Station then returning back along the estuary back up the River Torridge to the finish line at Richmond Dock.

Model Yacht Racing
Assemble at Royal George Inn, Irsha Street, 11:30am
Racing Starts 12:00 Noon
Appledore has a long tradition of Model Yacht Sailing and this year is no different with several races taking place with a variety of model yachts of all sizes and styles.

There’s plenty of spare yachts for everyone young and old to have a go with plenty of experts on hand to help out!

MONDAY 28th JULY 2014
World Championship Crabbing Contest – Register 6:30pm, Starts 7:00pm

Family favourite for young and old, try catching as many crabs as possible in the allotted time to be the World Champion and win a prize.

TUESDAY 29th JULY 2014
Salmon Boat Races – Starts 6:30pm

This is a test of rowing endurance and team work rowing from the start line to the finish in a traditional Salmon Boat.

Gig Sprint Races – Starts 7:00pm
Competing local Gig Clubs race from the Anchor Slipway on Appledore Quay opposite the Seagate Hotel to the ‘Outter Pulley’ Marker Buoy at the opening of the Estuary toward the Sea where the waves are very challenging and race back to the Anchor Slipway.

Across the River ‘Tug of War’ – Starts 12:00pm Noon

Two teams will face the mud and sand and see who wins, this is going to be messy… but entertaining!challenge of pulling a rope at low tide on mud

Appledore Arts & Crafts – Appledore Hall

Regatta Day Starts 9:00am

Many events taking place on Appledore Quay & Instow Beach
W.E.A.R.A. Rowing with a record 10 Clubs, taking part in 38 races and some 170 set of crew from around the South West
Including Gig Club Boat Races, ‘Miller & Sweep’ Battle, Salmon Boat Tug ‘o’ War, Sculling over the Stern, Greasy Pole, Water Jousting, Children’s Instow Beach Races, RNLI Offshore Lifeboat and many other events & Stalls!

Over on Instow Beach
11.15am Beach Service, 11:00am – 1:00pm Dog Show open for entries, 12.30pm Dog Show open for classes, 1.30pm Sandcastle Competition, 2.30pm Childrens Races, 2:00 – 4:00 pm Face Painting,
4:00pm Tug of War, 5:00pm Beach Clean up
With BBQ, French Crepes, Stands and Music throughout the afternoon.

Gig Boat Estuary Sprints – Starts 7:30pm

See local Gig Clubs and crews compete in the Gig Boat Estuary Sprints form one end of Appledore Quay to the Anchor Slipway opposite the Seagate Hotel.
