A web designer who visited Dune Cottages and fell in love with North Devon here is my insight. If you haven’t already visited Woolacoombe beach yet, then your in for a treat. A hidden jewel of the English country, its won various awards including the “Best British Beach” in the Mail on Sunday and also holds an “England for Excellence Gold Award”. The first time I visited the beach I was taken with its immensity (a whopping 3 mile stretch) of golden sands filled with bohemian characters occupying the areas of shops, sand and surf. The sheer size of the beach means your likely to find a decent amount of seclusion and privacy to enjoy the sun and surf also.
Its one of the best places I’ve experienced for kids, soft sand, bordered with rows of rock pools were they can investigate the sea life. With a fishing net and bucket in hand children will have hours of fun exploring and learning about nature and the multitude of different animals inhabiting our shores. Anemones, barnacles, mussels, crabs, whelks and cockles all can be found on Woolacoombe beach. The sounds the smells and textures of Woolacoombe beach will have you reminiscing your own childhood memories of days out within our own classic British shores and even on the more overcast of days you can enjoy the surf if your equipped with the the necessary kit. I found that the wet suits, I used from the Cottages (Dune cottages has a vast selection of free wet suits donated by visiting guests whose children have out grown them etc . . 20 at my last count and adult sizes also) these enabled me and my son to really enjoy the water. A purchased boogie board for £15 and myself and my son were surfer dudes. Once in the sea we soon became accustomed to the temperature courtesy of the wetsuits and with a small amount of practice my son was actually travelling at decent speeds (all be it chest down on the board).
A disposable barbecue combined with a packed lunch of salads, breads and meats and we were set. With friends and family around me soothing tunes playing on the the obligatory blue tooth speaker and the sun shining I was truly in “Devon/Heaven”.
